History of the department

    Pediatrics department was established in September 1959 . To 1970 department was headed by PhD, associate professor D.Ogorodnyc, from 1970 to 2003 - member of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, MD, professor I. Smiyan, 2003-2004 - PhD, Associate Professor V. Loboda, from September 2004 to July 2005 - PhD, Associate Professor G. Pavlyshyn. In 1998 was created Department of propaedeutic of childhood diseases, which led MD, Prof. O. Fedortsiv. Since July 2005, the Department of Pediatrics, which was merged with the Department of propaedeutics of childhood diseases, headed by MD, Prof. O. Fedortsiv. From the first of september 2016 the head of the Department –  Professor Oksana Romanivna Boyarchuk, Doctor of Medical Science, PhD in Medicine.
 The specificity of staff of the department is inextricable link between science and practice, every day they combine teacher, doctor and scientist
    Research work of the department "Study vegetative status in children with different somatic pathology" aimed at
-study vegetative status in children with different somatic pathology
-study the influence of social conditions of education, intranatal course, infants and junior school periods on the    formation characteristics of mental status of children, certain types of chronic somatic diseases and predisposition to socially negative behavior.
    Collective of department conducted annually conferences dedicated to medical and social problems of childhood.
    Department of childhood diseases for 5 years is the collaborator of the international research BUPAS on studying the prevalence of asthma in childhood.
    Collective of department are coordinators of the international study from Poland, Canada and Belarus.

Main scientific achievements of department

    Over the last 5 years the scientists of the department published in magazines over 300 works, defended 7 PhD theses, released 14 guidelines, 15 information letters, received 10 patents for invention.

Clinical work of the department

    All members of the department involved in clinical and pathological conferences, presents research results at intermittent pediatricians courses, conducts an annual analysis of infant mortality, participats in school-workshops on various issues of practical public health under the auspices Ministries of Health of Ukraine.
    Head of Department in 2007-2008 worked in the working group of the Ministry of Health to develop a protocol of care for healthy child up to 3 years.
    As a result of this work issued an order from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine №149 20.03.2008 year.
    Since September 2009 members of the department are actively involved in the international project BUPAS, collaborating with scientists and physicians from Poland and Belarus.
    The main achievements on the introduction of new technologies at the department in medical diagnostic process is a method of early diagnosis and improved treatment, based on 6 protected master's theses led by prof. Fedortsiv O:
    - Optimization of treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and reactive in children based on better understanding of the clinical course, indicators of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant system and the immune system by including in complex treatment "Epadolu" and products for special dietary meals (Yarema N.)
    - Improving the effectiveness of early diagnosis of health disorders in children of different age groups by studying the characteristics of general nonspecific adaptive processes and criteria morphometric analysis of lymphocytes and improve treatment monitoring and prognosis of community-acquired pneumonia according to the state body resistance (Haliyash N.)
    - improvement of the diagnostic algorithm in endemic goiter in the background comorbidity and pharmacological correction of these disorders (Bugera A.)
    - study of the functional state of endothelium factors of endothelial dysfunction in children with community-acquired pneumonia and application in the treatment the drug with endothelium protective action (Chornomydz I.)
    - improving the efficiency of the treatment of atopic dermatitis in children based on the study of oxygen homeostasis, immune status and lipid peroxidation (Y. Oliynyk).
    - improving the system of diagnostic and methods of normalization adaptive capacity in preschool children based on the study of individual characteristics (Luchyshyn N.).
    All research results of scientists of department constantly being introduced in public health practice in regional children's hospitals and other medical institutions of the city and the region.
    Directions of the future researches will cover a variety of topical issues of Pediatrics. To do this, the team plans to continue presenting our country in international projects BUPAS POLBUKAN and cooperating with doctors in Poland, Belarus, Canada.

Conferences and seminars

    Employees of the department annually organizes work on scientific and practical conference "Medical and social problems of childhood", where scientists of the department make presentations.
    Prof. Fedortsiv O. participated in the Congress of the Polish Society of lung diseases from 1september 2010 to 4 september 2010 in Mykolaykiv city in Poland, and presented there spoken report: "Epidemiology of asthma, causes, risk factors, prevention."
    Prof. Fedortsiv O., assistant professor Kubej I. were abroad 8-11 September 2011 in Krakow (Poland) at the scientific conference "Epidemiology and prevention of asthma in children" with their reports: "Allergic respiratory diseases in children. Modern factors", "Possible non-specific adaptive immune factors in the development of pneumonia in children", "Clinical and laboratory criteria of pneumonia".
    Associate Professor Vorontsova T. from 24 January to 28 January 2012 participated in the Congress of pediatricians in Russia (Moscow).
    Prof.Fedortsiv O. from 10 October 2013 to 10 October 2013 participated in the international conference "Polish-Slovak XXVI days Pulmonology and Allergology" in the city Rabka Zdroj, Poland.
    Assistant professor Kinash M. received training at Wroclaw Medical University pediatric gastroenterology from 28 October to 11 November 2013, in Wroclaw, Poland.
    Assistant professor Vorontsova T. and assistant professor Kubej I.from 19 November to 21November 2013 visited the Kirov State Medical Academy, in Kirov, Russia. There were lectures for students of the 5th year of pediatric and medical faculties in endocrinology and neonatology.
    Prof. Fedortsiv O. from 14 October 2014 to 24 October 2014. participated in an international symposium in Saskatun, Canada "Safety and health of the rural population: Global Perspectives (SHAPR)», which made a presentation.
    Assistant professor Vorontsova T. from 9 September to 11 September 2014 took part in the 6th Congress of Pediatricians of CIS in Minsk, Belarus.

    Prof . Fedortsiv O. from 14 March to 15 March 2015 participated in an international conference in Yelenya-Hura, Poland, where maded the report "Peculiarities of asthma in young children." Between 6 and 9 May 2015 at the State Higher Professional Medical School in Opole, Poland, held the second international conference entitled "From idea to publication." Professor O. Fedortsiv actively participated in the Forum, where made the report "Application objectively statistical analysis to present data in scientific publications."
    8-9 october, 2015 prof. O. Fedortsiv with her graduate student had the report ‘Oxidative stress and psychological component in the mechanisms of asthma in children’ on XXVIII Slovak-Poland Voitec-Rudnic pneumophtisiological and immunoallergological days in Zakopane, Poland.
    The department prepared 10 information sheets on innovations in health care, 6 monographs, 3 patents, 9 books and manuals.

    In 1994 she graduated from the Medical Department of Ternopil State Medical Institute named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky. In 1996 she graduated from the magistracy, and in 1999 – she graduated from the postgraduate study at the Pediatrics Department of Postgraduate Education Faculty of Ternopil State Medical Institute.

Research activities:
    In 1999 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “The Efficiency of High Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation of Low Intensity in Treatment of Chronic Gastroduodenitis in Children” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).
    In 2014 she defended her dissertation for the degree of doctor of medical sciences on the topic: “Clinical and Pathogenetic Aspects of Course Rheumatic Disease in Children, the Optimizing of Treatment and its Prevention” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).
    Docent of the Pediatrics Department, Faculty of Postgraduate Education since 2008, professor of the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of Ternopil State Medical University named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky since 2014.

    Children cardiorheumatology, clinical immunology, children gastroenterology, pathology of early infants..

    Prof. O. R. Boyarchuk is author and coauthor of over 200 scientific publications, including 2 textbooks, 1 monograph.

Professor Olga Yevhenivna Fedortsiv

Education:
    In 1973 she graduated with honors Yahilnytsk’ secondary school and entered to Ternopil State Medical Institute named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky.
    In 1980 she graduated from the Medical Department of this higher educational establishment, received the 

diploma with honors in specialty "Medicine".

Research activities:
    In september 1987 at Specialized Academic Council in Kyiv Research Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology named after prof. P. M. Bujka she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “The Clinical Significance of Structural and Functional state of Biological Membranes in Various Forms of Hypotrophy” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics). In october 1998 she successfully defended at this Specialized Academic Council dissertation for the degree of doctor of medical sciences on the topic: “Clinical and Pathogenetic Grounds of Complex Treatment of Chronic Nutrition Disorders in Infants” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).

Research interests:
    The main directions of her research activities is to study influence adverse environmental factors on the health of children, breastfeeding problems, allergic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, diffuse toxic goiter, state of organism reactivity of healthy and sick children.
    Every year the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery, headed by prof. O. Ye. Fedortsiv organizes republican and regional conferences on the topic: “Medical, Social and Environmental Problems of Childhood”. Since 2009 the department is actively involved in international epidemiological studies of asthma prevalence and other allergic diseases among children in Eastern Europe.
    The Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery has established close scientific relations with the Department of Epidemiology of Silezinsky Medical University (Katowice, Poland), Medical Academy of Wroclaw University (Poland), University of Saskatchewan (Canada), Hrodnensky State University named after Yanka Kupala and Grodnensky State Medical University (Belarus).

Scientific publications and ratings: 
     Prof. O. Ye. Fedortsiv prepared 8 PhD, 10 Masters, 9 clinical residents, she is author of 260 scientific publications, including 2 monographs, 1 textbook in English, 5 manuals, 6 patents, 15 newsletters.

    In 1986 she graduated from the Medical Department of Ternopil State Medical Institute named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky. Since 1992 to 1994 she passed clinical residency training of specialty "Pediatrics". In 1994 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “Pathogenetic Grounds of Using Enterosorption and Nucleinatis Natrii in Children with Pyelonephritis” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics). Since 1994 she began to work as an assistant at the Department of Pediatrics in Ternopil State Medical Academy. In 2002 she received the highest qualification category on the specialty "Pediatrics" and awarded the rank of docent. At the moment she is working as a docent and head teacher at the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of Ternopil State Medical University named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky.
    In 2014 she passed courses in pediatric gastroenterology at the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P. L. Shupyk of the Health Care Ministry and was awarded the title of doctor Specialist in “Children's Gastroenterology”.


Research interests:
    Research and correction of physical development in children nutrition, child nutrition study and improvement of new diagnostic methods, treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases, study of microelementosis.

Research activities:
    In 1986 she graduated from the Medical Department of Ternopil State Medical Institute named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky, after she worked as pediatrician in Borshchiv district hospital. Since January 1989 she worked as neonatologists in Ternopil obstetric hospital. Since September 1989 she entered to clinical residency on the speciality “Pediatrics” of Ternopil State Medical Institite named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky, after graduating she worked as assistant of the Pediatrics Department of this higher educational establishment. Since March 2007 she was elected to the post of docent at the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of Ternopil State Medical University named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky.
    In 1996 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “The Efficiency of Magnetic-Laser Therapy in the Treatment of Pyelonephritis in Children” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).
    She is doctor of the highest qualification category in the speciality “Pediatrics” and a member of public organization "Doctors of square". Is member of international scientific research (Poland, Canada, Ukraine, Belarus) study on asthma prevalence among children. Member of European Association for the problem of vitamin D deficiency (EVIDAS).

Research interests:
    Priority directions of clinical work - a disease of early childhood, neurology, childhood infections, feeding issues and nutrition.

Research activities:
    In 1998 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “Defeat the Upper digestive tract in children with nonspecific respiratory infection” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics). In 2001 was awarded the academic rank of docent. In 2014 - specialization of “Children's infectious diseases” at the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P. L. Shupyk of the Health Care Ministry.

Research interests:
    Development of monitoring system of the health and nutrition in early childhood, studying of psycho-functional relationship between mother and child and psychophysiology of sleep depending on feeding babies, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases at the present stage. She is a member of international scientific research (Poland, Canada, Ukraine, Belarus) for the study of bronchial asthma prevalence among children.

Horbachevsky, after finished postgraduate study at the Department of Pediatrics of this higher educational establishment.

Research activities:
    In 1994 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “Substantiation Appointment of Enterosorbents in Rehabilitation Therapy for Premature Infants” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics). Since 2004 she is the docent of the Department of Faculty and Hospital Pediatrics.

    Neonatology, pathology of early childhood, the issue of feeding and nutrition, clinical genetics.

    She graduated from the Medical Department of Ternopil State Medical Institute named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky, began to work at the Pediatrics Department of this higher educational establishment from 1993.

Research activities:
    In 1998 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences in National Medical University named after O. O. Bohomolets on the topic: “Clinical and Metabolic Disorders in Children with Acute Dysentery and Enterosgel Efficiency in Treatment” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics), the supervisor of the thesis was a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences in Ukraine, prof. I. Smiyan. Since 2004 she is the docent of the Department of Faculty and Hospital Pediatrics.

Research interests:
    Infectious diseases of childhood, their active prevention continues to be a favorite, but not the only subject for scientific research, diagnositic of emotional component of developing chronic diseases in children.

Volianska is an author of more than 150 scientific publications and four textbooks: "Actual problems of vaccine prevention of infectious diseases in children" (2001), "Children's Infectology" (2004), "Stages to the medical profession" (2014), "Pediatrics evaluation of research results" (2015).

    In september 2000 at Specialized Academic Council in Kyiv Research Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology named after prof. P. M. Bujka he defended his dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “Clinical and Pathogenetic Grounds of Complex Treatment of Chronic Pyelonephritis, Combined with Gastroduodenal Pathology in Children” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).
    Since September 2011 he is the doctor of the highest qualification category. Since July 2011 she is the docent of the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery.

Research interests:
    New methods of diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases of digestive system in children.

    Docent I. M. Horishniy is author of more than 68 scientific publications, author of one patent for invention, co-author of 2 monographs, 1 methodological recommendations for doctors, 3 newsletters and also coauthor of handbook on children's infectious diseases "Manual of Children's Infectious Diseases", written in English for foreign students.

    Introducing new modern methods of treatment and diagnostics of various surgical pathology in children, development of complex treatments septic diseases and birth defects of the gastrointestinal tract. Many modern methods of treatment had been introduced such as: transanal intestinal intubation combined with a programmable laparotomy with diffuse peritonitis and intestinal obstruction, percutaneous and open intramedullar osteo perforation in osteomyelitis and in newborns - arthro joint puncture and drainage, one-step treatment hipospadiy (plastic urethra), orhopeksiya through a "window" in the aponeurosis at the inguinal cryptorchidism.
    New techniques are implemented in the surgery department such is: ventrykul-perytoneum shunt with hydrocephalus, Pan’s operation in anorectal atresia, operation Soave with Hirschsprung's disease, surgical intervention in infants with various malformations (hastroshyzis, omphalocele, esophageal atresia and different parts of the intestine, intestinal abnormalities), laparoscopy both in planned and emergency surgery, infrared coagulation in treating of hemangiomas.

    Assistant Ya. V. Rohalska is an author and coauthor of more than 16 scientific publications, 1 patent for utility model. Methodological recommendations are developed for an expanded scope of laboratory examinations of young children with iron deficiency anemia, which involves determining the content of certain micro and macroelements (copper, zinc, magnesium) in biological fluids. The method of treating patients with iron deficiency anemia through therapeutic application in complex feroterapiya additionally complex microelement drug was proposed.

    Modern methods of surgical treatment of torticollis, congenital hip dislocation, clubfoot, Blount disease, bone tumors, primary surgical treatment of wounds using external fixators, intramedullary and other types of bone osteosynthesis in childrens with bone fractures, biopotentials and blood supply to the brain during osteochondropathy syndrome in children, modern methods of surgical treatment (minimally invasive osteosynthesis) of bone fractures using titanium construction with angular stability and elastic rods.

Research interests:
    Optimization and improvement of new diagnostic methods, treatment and prevention of allergic disease in children, methods of allergen-specific immunotherapy, studying of atopic risk factors and their influence on allergic diseases and "atopic march" in children, especially the pathogenesis and immunological status, formation of sensitization and immunological tolerance to allergens in children with allergic diseases, clinical course of atopic dermatitis depending on the severity in different age periods in children also at the background of combined allergic pathology (bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis).
  

Teaching Process at the Department

    The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th year students of Medical Faculty, 4th year students of Faculty of Pharmacy, 3rd and 4th year students of Faculty of Dentistry, students of Nursing school receive theoretical and practical knowledge. Students study such subjects: Propaedeutic Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Courses of Medical Genetics, Pediatric Infections and Pediatric Surgery, selective course Nutrition. The Department staff constantly develops progressive methods of teaching. 12 teaching manuals and textbooks were published, including “Practical pediatrics”,” Faculty pediatrics”, “Hospital pediatrics”, “Pediatrics” (series of lectures), “Features and Semiotics diseases of children age”, “Medical Genetics”,” Child Infectology”, “Pediatrics in the situational problems”, “Algorithms and practical skills in pediatrics”, 'Manual of propaedeutic pediatrics”; 40 methodical recommendations. A CD of rational nutrition of children of early age “Neonatology”, educational CD “Practical Skills in pediatrics” were created.

 

Research

    Research work of the department “Impact of eco pathological factors on the health of children” is aimed at:

    -installation of modern trends in the health of children of different age groups and peculiarities of factors that form it;
    -determination of interconnection between the components of health, level of basic marker homeostasis of child organism, indicators of immunological reactivity, mineral exchange, intestine biocenosis and lipids peroxidation socio - environmental and living conditions;
    -development of comprehensive criteria for evaluating and monitoring the health of children in areas with different socio - environmental conditions;
    -creation of regional anthropometrical standards;
    -evaluation of features of actual nutrition of children of critical groups (first year of life, primary school, adolescence), his relationship with the formation of common childhood diseases;
    -proceeding of food and drug correction methods of food worsening;
    -development of new prevention technologies that provide improvement of adaptive capacities of children to adverse factors of natural and social environment;
    -establishing clinical - diagnostic criteria of children disadaptation, creation of a program of forecasting health disorders, taking into account the impact of environment pathological and health - social factors;
    -formation of differentiated preventive – rehabilitation measures for children with different risk groups;
    -organization of health - social and psychological assistance;
    -study of mechanisms basic systems of organism adaptation to environmental conditions, which constantly change, influencу of food on children's health in the postnatal period of ontogenesis, risk factors, which determine the development of level of social integration in critical age periods;
    -improving methods of diagnosis, treatment and preventive osteoporosis in children with various somatic pathology, development of methods of correction of detected changes.
    The Department annually performs scientific conferences on environment pathological factors in childhood.

 

Major scientific achievements of the department

    A new concept of etiopathogenesis of chronic nutrition disorders in children is developed, a new approach for prevention and treatment was proposed; efficiency of enterosorbents separately and in combination with bacterial preparations, immunostimulants and antioxidants in chronic nutrition disorders, infectious diarrhea in children of early age was studied. Monograph by Fedortsiv O. Y. 'Chronic nutrition disorders in children of early age' was published.
    Diagnosis criteria of malabsorbtion syndrome were proposed to practical medicine. Developed concept: the bases of dyspeptic syndrome in children of early age are violations of abdominal and pre-wall digestion and absorption. A fundamentally new scheme of hypotrophy etiopathogenesis was developed and new methods of prevention and treatment were proposed.
    Diagnostic criteria of endogenous intoxication syndrome in children with different pathology and methods of its correction were developed and implemented in health practice. Research shows the mechanisms of actions and efficiency in enterosorbents in complex treatment of somatic diseases in children.
    Mechanisms of osteoporosis in different somatic pathology were studied.
    Over the last 5 years, scholars of the department published in journals and digest more than 300 works, 14 methodic instructions, 8 newsletters were issued, 6 patents on inventions were received.

Clinical work
    Employees of the department provide people with consultative medical help on the basis of Regional Children’s Hospital and Municipal Clinic, a specialized regional orphanage, boarding school in Koropets village, conduct clinical and clinic-pathanatomy conferences, organize seminars of advanced doctor studies, introduce new methods of treatment, prophylaxis, diagnostics of children's diseases.

    Department of Pediatrics with Pediatric Surgery №1 is located at Ternopil Regional Children's Hospital. The department staff performs clinical work in I and II children’s departments with cardiac, rheumatologic, nephrology, gastroenterological, endocrinology beds and in pulmonology, infectious diagnostic and surgical departments. The department has 19 teachers, including 2 professors, 14 associate professors and 3 assistant professors. All employees of the Department in 2011 were re-certified in medical categories and 16 of them have the highest category in the field "Pediatrics" and "Children's Surgery."
