Pediatrics department was established in September 1959 . To 1970 department was headed by PhD, associate professor D.Ogorodnyc, from 1970 to 2003 - member of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, MD, professor I. Smiyan, 2003-2004 - PhD, Associate Professor V. Loboda, from September 2004 to July 2005 - PhD, Associate Professor G. Pavlyshyn. In 1998 was created Department of propaedeutic of childhood diseases, which led MD, Prof. O. Fedortsiv. Since July 2005, the Department of Pediatrics, which was merged with the Department of propaedeutics of childhood diseases, headed by MD, Prof. O. Fedortsiv. From the first of september 2016 the head of the Department – Professor Oksana Romanivna Boyarchuk, Doctor of Medical Science, PhD in Medicine.

The specificity of staff of the department is inextricable link between science and practice, every day they combine teacher, doctor and scientist

Research work of the department "Study vegetative status in children with different somatic pathology" aimed at

-study vegetative status in children with different somatic pathology

-study the influence of social conditions of education, intranatal course, infants and junior school periods on the formation characteristics of mental status of children, certain types of chronic somatic diseases and predisposition to socially negative behavior.

Collective of department conducted annually conferences dedicated to medical and social problems of childhood.

Department of childhood diseases for 5 years is the collaborator of the international research BUPAS on studying the prevalence of asthma in childhood.

Collective of department are coordinators of the international study from Poland, Canada and Belarus.

Ivan Semenovich Smiyan was born on January 10, 1929 , in the village of Belka , now Trostianetsky district of the Sumy region of Ukraine, in a simple peasant family.

Education:

He studied at a paramedic and obstetric school, after which in 1948 he received appointment of a head of a feldsher-obstetrician station in the village. Verbivtsy (now Terebovlyan district). He graduated with distinction from the pediatric faculty Kharkiv Medical Institute (1957, now the university). Worked as a doctor, chief doctor of the children's sanatorium "Dzherelo" in Truskavets,Lviv region (1957-1962), head of the department of Transcarpathian research institute (1962-1964), senior researcher, head of the Zheleznovodsk Clinic of the Institute of Nursing in Pyatigorsk (1964-1970 , now Stavropol Territory , Russia ).

From 1970 to 2005 he worked at the Ternopil Medical Institute (now TDMU) in the positions of: Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Vice-Rector for Educational Work, Rector (1981-1997), Professor of the Department of Pediatrics; advisor to the rector.

Research activities:

Has prepared 43 doctors and candidates of sciences, is an honorary chairman of the Council of Truskavets, an honorary chairman of the Ternopil Regional Association of Pediatricians, a member of numerous editorial boards of scientific and practical journals.

Member of the Supervisory Board of the I. I. Gorbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University .

In 1961 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on the topic "Resort treatment of chronic gepatoholetsisty in children". In 1968, he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic "Chronic diseases of the hepatobiliary system in children and their sanatorium and spa treatment".

Research interests:

Priority directions of Ivan Semenovich's research were:

  • study of etiology , pathogenesis , clinics and treatment of diseases of hepatobiliary, bronchopulmonary, gastroduodenal systems, kidney and urinary tract, hypotrophy, pathology of the period of newborn birth.
  • definition of the concept of origin, classification and treatment of malabsorption syndrome, endogenous intoxication and its correction in pediatrics, the role of lipid peroxide oxidation;
  • Determination of the state of mineral density of bones at different pathologies in children.

For the first time he scientifically substantiated and developed methods for treating children at the drinking resorts.

Research activities:

In september 1987 at Specialized Academic Council in Kyiv Research Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology named after prof. P. M. Bujka she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “The Clinical Significance of Structural and Functional state of Biological Membranes in Various Forms of Hypotrophy” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics). In october 1998 she successfully defended at this Specialized Academic Council dissertation for the degree of doctor of medical sciences on the topic: “Clinical and Pathogenetic Grounds of Complex Treatment of Chronic Nutrition Disorders in Infants” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).

Research interests:

The main directions of her research activities is to study influence adverse environmental factors on the health of children, breastfeeding problems, allergic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, pneumonia, diffuse toxic goiter, state of organism reactivity of healthy and sick children.

Every year the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery, headed by prof. O. Ye. Fedortsiv organizes republican and regional conferences on the topic: “Medical, Social and Environmental Problems of Childhood”. Since 2009 the department is actively involved in international epidemiological studies of asthma prevalence and other allergic diseases among children in Eastern Europe.

The Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery has established close scientific relations with the Department of Epidemiology of Silezinsky Medical University (Katowice, Poland), Medical Academy of Wroclaw University (Poland), University of Saskatchewan (Canada), Hrodnensky State University named after Yanka Kupala and Grodnensky State Medical University (Belarus).

In 1999 she defended her dissertation for the degree of candidate of medical sciences on the topic: “The Efficiency of High Frequency Electromagnetic Radiation of Low Intensity in Treatment of Chronic Gastroduodenitis in Children” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).

In 2014 she defended her dissertation for the degree of doctor of medical sciences on the topic: “Clinical and Pathogenetic Aspects of Course Rheumatic Disease in Children, the Optimizing of Treatment and its Prevention” (specialty 14.01.10 - pediatrics).

Docent of the Pediatrics Department, Faculty of Postgraduate Education since 2008, professor of the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery of Ternopil State Medical University named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky since 2014.
